About Pergamon
The ancient city of Pergamon, also known as Pergamum, was a hub of cultural and intellectual activity during the Hellenistic period. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon under the Attalid Dynasty from 281 to 133 BC. The city was renowned for its grand library, which was built as a rival to Alexandria’s famed library, and boasted a hospital that was one of the largest of its kind in the ancient world.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Pergamon was the Asklepeion, a spa and medical center established by Galen, the founder of modern medicine. Here, patients were treated using a combination of music, water, and dream analysis. The city’s prosperity was driven by its thriving agriculture and silver mines, and its inhabitants even invented parchment, which they called charta pergamena.
Pergamon‘s religious life centered around several temples dedicated to Athena and Zeus, which were considered among the most magnificent in the ancient world. The city’s prosperity even posed a threat to Rome at one point. Today, one of the most famous of these temples can be seen in the Pergamon Museum in Germany.
In addition to its cultural and historical significance, Pergamon holds an important place in Christianity as one of the Seven Churches of the Book of Revelations. According to the Bible, it was the city where Satan dwelled and where his throne was located.
Today, Pergamon is a popular tourist destination in modern-day Turkey, attracting visitors from all over the world. The city is situated 26 kilometers inland from the Aegean Sea and is located on the north bank of the river Caicus, making it easily accessible for those looking to explore this fascinating piece of ancient history.
